I smoked about 1 1/2 packs a day for 17 years, after starting at age 13. I went through 4 major quits before (3, 4, 6, and 8 months). 3 of them failed, the last I chose to end in order to keep my marriage (long story, but it wasn't me caving to addiction, it was my wife giving me an ultimatum)... but I figured out how to quit by the end of that one.
I'm applying that process now and it's working great! My wife still smokes, but that is not even a temptation to me.
Learn and accept that smoking gives you NOTHING but death. Comfort from it is an illusion, as is stress relief, hunger mitigation, anger management, and all the other things we attributed to the smokes. Learn to hate them, not "suffer" by giving them up and you'll learn not to crave them ever again.
Advice:
Know your enemy (cigarette) for what it is, and have no fear! Look your enemy in the eye and know him for death. He offers nothing in return. You gotta wanna!
